APPLICATION
Students must submit a completed application to the Aspiring Academics program by May 15, 2023.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The goal of the program is to strengthen the students' understanding of and commitment to a career in academic pharmacy. Twenty (20) student-faculty pairs will be selected to participate in a hybrid longitudinal program between August 2023 and July 2024. Most program components will be delivered online and culminate at the 2024 AACP Annual Meeting and Teachers' Seminar in Boston. Students will develop a network of peers and learn from a faculty mentor at their own institution (the home mentor), and one assigned by AACP (the AACP group mentor). Participants will view and discuss 3 online modules and develop a group poster to showcase what they have learned.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
All eligible students are invited to apply. Eligible students must be enrolled in a Pharm.D. program at a member school during the 2023-2024 (upcoming) Academic Year with one of the following statuses:
- P3 Pharm.D. student in a 4-year program,
- P2 Pharm.D. student in an accelerated 3-year program, OR
- P5 (out of P6) student in a 0-6 program.
PROGRAM EXPENSES
No more than one student will be accepted per institution. The college or school of pharmacy must agree in advance to cover the student's travel expenses for the 2024 AACP Annual Meeting and Teachers' Seminar, if accepted. AACP will waive the meeting registration fees for these students. Mentors are also required to attend and are responsible for their travel and meeting registration fees.
ASPIRING ACADEMICS VS. WALMART SCHOLARS
The AACP Aspiring Academics (AAA) program differs from the (discontinued) Walmart Scholars program because it offers a virtual, year-long program in addition to programming at the AACP Annual Meeting. The mentorship model has been expanded to include a new AACP group mentor from a different college of pharmacy who will facilitate the virtual peer group discussions. Students will learn about pharmacy academia via three online modules and guided reflections with both types of mentors. Additionally, students will develop a group poster and present it at the 2024 Annual Meeting.
