Helps the pharmacists prepare the medication for final dispensing and to carry out other pharmacy related functions as directed by the Pharmacists. Aseptically prepares IV admixtures as instructed by the Pharmacists.
Inventory control for narcotics in automated medstations, resolves all discrepancies, supervise pre-packaging of liquids and oral medications, refill narcotics in automated medstations. Keeps record up to date for narcotic discrepancies and pre-packaging.
Essential Functions
RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
Aseptically prepares IV admixtures as instructed by the pharmacists. Keeps clean air room and preparation areas clean to comply with and USP guidelines. Documents all cleaning activities for final audits.
Prepares, fills and labels medications for final dispensing authorization by the pharmacists.
Prepares the unit dose accurately according to the refill list for the pharmacist final authorization and fill the automated medication station in timely manner.
Pre packs oral bulk medications to unit dose in a ready to administer form with appropriate bar code.
Assist pharmacists in answering the phone calls.
Prepares medications boxes for anesthesia, open heart, ICU and crash carts
Makes pharmacy rounds to nursing units according to schedule and delivers medications to Pyxis machines, brings back and puts away returns or disposes returned doses properly.
Performs various pharmacy-related tasks to help maintain pharmacy efficiency and organization.
Complies with patient quality standards
Notifies narcotic discrepancies to nurse manager immediately and follow up till it gets resolved.
Over sees the pre-packaging of medications and records
Refills narcotics in automated medstations
Patient Care/Age Specific Responsibilities And Qualifications
Prepares medication according to label instructions. Have clear understanding of all age group of patients and their medication preparation.
ACCESS TO PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION
Computer system access is assigned based on manager’s access level request and on the minimum necessary as described in this job description. The system administrator or manager of the department that has ownership of system/module gives approval for level of access. See Computer system Access control policy.
Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements
One year of experience as technician trainee or certificate from accredited institution. Person should be educated regarding IV admixture, calculation, aseptic technique, drugs, disease states, pharmacology, infection control and pharmacy law.
Knowledge of hospital pharmacy information system and personal computer is required.
Needs to have the ability to aseptically prepare IV infusions or IV piggyback medications.
Skills needed: Basic math skills to calculate the volume/dosage for IV admixture, as well as interpersonal communication skills to work well with people and follow directions.
Must be able to lift 40 lbs and have coordination and dexterity to fill IVs.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Minimum requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent
Currently licensed as Pharmacy Technician by the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.

Internal -Pharmacists and other hospital employees.
External -Outpatients and other pharmacies.
ENVIRONMENT
Spends a majority of work time standing (60%), with some walking around the hospital (40%).
Includes moving or lifting of objects (up to 30 lbs.) on a regular basis (15% of time), especially IV boxes.
Exposed to possible injury from chemicals, oncolytics, needles or equipment (60% of time).
Exposure to airborne germs when delivering medications to the floor (40% of time).
Exposed to constant noise from printers and phones, etc. about 50% of the time.
