FDA Office of Clinical Pharmacology (OCP) Summer Internship

Time: Variable length from 8 (minimum) to 12 (maximum) weeks during the period May – September 2022 (starting on or after May 3, 2022 and ending on or before September 24, 2021). Note that start dates must be on a Monday, except for May 30, 2022 due to the federal holiday.

Location: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), White Oak Campus, Silver Spring, MD

*EXCEPTION FOR 2022* If we are still actively engaged in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, there may be the opportunity to engage in a fully virtual environment; however, participants will be required to report in Silver Spring, MD at the time that FDA employees return to the White Oak campus.

Applicant Eligibility: Students actively enrolled in degree programs at U.S. universities leading to a Master’s, an M.D., Pharm.D., or Ph.D. degree.

  • The Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12) mandates a background check be completed for both U.S. Citizens and foreign nationals. Foreign nationals must have resided in the U.S. for at least three (3) of the past five (5) years for FDA to be able to complete a background check.
  • Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.

Program:

  • Interns will be involved in regulatory research involving clinical pharmacology and drug development and will have a schedule of lectures/conferences on clinical pharmacology topics including policies and guidances.
  • The program will be administered under the auspices of the ORISE program, and the intern will receive a stipend of $1,500/month.
  • The applicant can elect not to choose a specialty area or can request specify areas of interest in clinical pharmacology such as a specific therapeutic area, specific patient populations, biomarkers, pharmacometrics, pharmacogenomics, or labeling or policy.
  • Approximately 40 positions will be available.
  • This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

  1. Cover letter, stating area of interest (if any) and availability to participate in this internship (preferred starting date on a Monday on or after May 31, 2022, and ending on a Friday on or before September 24, 2022; a minimum of 8 weeks is required, with a maximum of 12 weeks).

  3. One-page single-spaced statement of interest in drug development science.
  4. Two reference names and contact information (name/email address/contact number), OR two reference letters from the student’s academic/professional contacts. (Note: If you do not provide the contact information for your references OR the 2 letters, with your application, we will be unable to create a file for you; Additionally, these individuals will also be required to complete information via the Zintellect application system, if selected for further consideration by the OCP)
  5. Include in the body of your email, the degree you are seeking and concentration (if applicable), your anticipated year of completion, and the name of the college or university currently enrolled.
  6. If intern is selected, an additional application through Zintellect.com will be necessary.

Selection is on a rolling basis, so please apply early, and before March 11, 2022.
