The Pharmacy Student Administration Program will provide pharmacy students with a broad range of experience in pharmacy management and leadership practice. Responsibilities will be fulfilled under the coordination of a proven pharmacy management team.
The primary mission of the program is to develop leadership and management skills and provide a cadre of qualified future leaders and managers as part of succession planning. An integral part of the training will be accomplished through the formation of a mentor/mentee relationship between the student and the Chief of Pharmacy. The training will be hands-on, experiential learning. Emphasis will be on the adult learning model and development of self- assessment by the student, with guidance and constructive, frequent feedback from the pharmacy management team of preceptors.
The purpose of this administration program training is to prepare the student for a residency position with a concentration in management, or to prepare the student to potentially attain an entry level management position in either clinical pharmacy or operations. This can be achieved by developing a knowledge base centered on enhancing patient care along with safe, efficient medication use within the framework of pharmacy administration and leadership.
- Successful students from this program will demonstrate the ability to develop, implement, maintain, and monitor operational and clinical pharmacy services.
- Skills will include strategic planning, personal mastery, communication, teamwork, customer service, fiscal management, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, and evidence-based medication use.
- The student program in the area of pharmacy administration will be sponsored and supported by the Pharmacy Department of the Jesse Brown VAMC (JBVAMC) in Chicago, Illinois. The administration program will allow us to attract and train future pharmacy leaders. This is critical for not only the JBVAMC, but also the national VA system.
