The Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center (KCVAMC) is a large teaching facility affiliated with the University of Kansas Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy and University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy that supports over 55,000 Veterans.  The KCVAMC services include Ambulatory Care provided at the Medical Center, Honor Annex and seven Community Based Outpatient Clinics, over 15 subspecialty clinics as well as 125 Inpatient beds.  The KCVAMC utilizes the VA Computerized Patient Record System that provides instantaneous access to each patient’s electronic medical record, electronic physician order entry, and bar code medication administration.

The annual stipend for the PGY1 program is $42,167 and $45,681 for PGY2 programs with financial compensation for staffing.  Benefits include 11 paid federal holidays, 13 vacation and sick leave days, and access to group health insurance.

PGY1 Pharmacy Practice

This PGY1 residency program offers a well-rounded clinical pharmacy experience in both inpatient and ambulatory care practice areas including: cardiology, diabetes, hematology/oncology, infectious disease/HIV, internal medicine, home based primary care, medical intensive care, primary care, psychiatry, pharmacoeconomics, practice management and rural health.    As adjunct faculty at the UMKC School of Pharmacy, the resident will gain experience in lecture preparation, didactic teaching and precepting of students on site.  A teaching certificate is also available through the UMKC School of Pharmacy.  Our preceptors are residency-trained pharmacists who work cohesively to promote the interests of the residents.  With a variety of experiences available, flexibility is key, and focus is given to each individual resident’s needs.  In each experience, the resident works closely with the residency director and the rotation preceptor to develop goals and objectives that will assist the resident in expanding skills for current and future practice.   This ASHP accredited program has been training residents for over 30 years.

PGY2 Ambulatory Care

This specialized residency program is designed to develop the clinical skills essential for an ambulatory care pharmacy practice. This program offers experiences in traditional pharmacist run disease state management clinics in the primary care setting as well as pharmacist run clinics in specialty areas.  The resident will also gain Rural Health experience spending time at the CBOC in Cameron, MO and through telehealth clinics.  The resident also participates in home based primary care, academic detailing, formulary management and practice management. The resident works closely with the residency director and primary preceptors to develop goals and objectives that will assist the resident in expanding skills for current and future practice.   This will be the twelfth year for this ASHP accredited program.

PGY2 Infectious Disease

The Infectious Diseases residency program offers training opportunities for the individual desiring to develop clinical competency in the specialized area of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy. This 12-month training program offers a variety of inpatient and outpatient learning experiences designed to build the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients with infectious diseases. Unique program features include longitudinal and concentrated rotations in HIV/AIDS primary care and chronic Hepatitis C management, as well as the opportunity for involvement in antimicrobial stewardship activities in the ambulatory care setting in addition to inpatient stewardship.  This will be the eighth year for this ASHP accredited program.
