The VA Quality Scholars Fellowship (VAQS) is an interprofessional fellowship program designed to recruit and train future clinical leaders, researchers, and innovators specially equipped to improve healthcare equity and accessibility for marginalized and rural groups. Established in 1999, the VAQS program is currently offered at 12 VA Medical Centers nationally, and the Charleston site is housed in the Health Equity and Rural Outreach Innovation Center (HEROIC). The fellowship is a 2-year, in-person, full-time program which links individualized training at each site with cross-site learning experiences convened by a national coordinating center at the Houston, TX VAMC. Fellows split their time between on-site clinical work, independent studies, and structured didactics while guided by a set of experienced mentors, and they receive specialized training with both the national and local sites. The fellowship's education supplements the VAQS core curriculum with didactic and experiential learning opportunities in the areas of population health, social determinants of health, and vulnerable Veteran populations—including women, racial/ethnic minorities, and rural residents. Fellows receive individualized education through Master's-level training in public health, clinical research methods, or clinical informatics based on learner-specified goals. The fellowship offers up to 3 positions per year for fellows to work with senior scholars in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and clinical psychology.

Nurses engaged in a DNP or PhD program as well as post-doctoral nurses are welcome to apply. Physician applicants should have completed an ACGME accredited residency or fellowship training program, should be board-certified or board-eligible, and should have an active, unrestricted U.S. medical license. Postdoctoral pharmacists and residency-trained PharmD's, clinical psychologists, and/or other licensed clinicians are also strongly encouraged to apply.
