Download iCal FileSwedish Hospital (Part of Northshore) - Pharmacy Tech 1 - Emergency Room: Interviews patients in the ED to compile a comprehensive list of medications including all prescription medications, herbals, vitamins, nutritional supplements, over-the-counter drugs, vaccines, diagnostic and contrast agents, radioactive medications, parenteral nutrition, blood derivatives, and intravenous solutions.
RESPONSIBILITES
Essential Functions
Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
May make Pharmacy rounds to nursing units according to schedule, and prepares medications for transportation rounds.
Performs various pharmacy-related tasks to help maintain pharmacy efficiency, throughput and the organization.
Complies with patient quality standards.
PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Prepares medication according to label instructions. Have clear understanding of all age group of patients and their medication preparation.
ACCESS TO PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION:
Computer system access is assigned based on manager’s access level request and on the minimum necessary as described I this job description. The system administrator or manager of the department that has ownership of system/module gives approval for level of access. See Computer system Access control policy.
QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIRMENTS
- One-year experience as a technician trainee or certificate from accredited institution preferred. Person should be able to understand drugs, disease states, pharmacology, infection control and pharmacy law.
- One-year experience in a hospital environment preferred.
- Skills needed: Basic math skills, as well as interpersonal communication skills to work with people and follow directions
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
- Minimum requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent
- Currently licensed by the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
- Pharmacy Technician certification training preferred.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS
Internal – Pharmacists and other hospital employees.
External – Outpatients and other pharmacies
ENVIRONMENT
- Spends a majority of work time standing (50%), with some walking around the hospital (40%), and little sitting (less than 10%)
- May included moving or lifting of objects on a regular basis (up to 30 lbs.), especially IV boxes.
- Includes making rounds to nursing stations about 40% of the time.
- Exposed to possible injury from chemicals, oncolytic, needles, or equipment (15% of time).
- Exposure to airborne germs, when delivering medications to the floor and interviewing patients (up to 40% of time)
- Other environmental conditions might include eye strain and exposures to computer side effects, such as radiation and high-pitched noise, if duties include entering charges for nursing stations on the computer. Also, exposed to constant noise from printers and phones, ect. about 50% of the time.
