The Outbreak Response Team (ORT) is an interdisciplinary team that provides testing, vaccination and infection control services to residents of the City of Chicago in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH). The ORT, co-led by faculty in the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing, grew out of a rapid response team established during the earliest days of COVID designed to ensure that the most vulnerable of Chicago’s residents had access to testing and health information. Our team works in the community primarily with people living in congregate settings (Long term care facilities, correctional facilities, shelters for those experiencing homelessness or for new arrivals, and residential treatment centers) or low-income or subsidized housing. Additionally, we focus on populations who are most vulnerable to contracting certain communicable diseases or to having poor outcomes from exposure to the disease. Finally, we are involved in developing protocols to expand capacity to deliver community-based care for a wide variety of infectious diseases.
