UPHARM Objectives
- Provide selected students with an understanding of social, environmental, and economic issues that contribute to health disparities in urban settings.
- Provide skills to address the needs of an urban population, including culturally competent communications, physical examination techniques and teamwork.
- Provide cross-cultural clinical skills and knowledge of disease and medical conditions prevalent in urban areas.
- Develop in program participants a commitment to serve as practicing pharmacists and leaders in an urban setting.
Community Outreach
Community outreach is a staple of the UPHARM program. UPHARM student teams provide health literacy and education with regards to hyper tension, diabetes and other relevant health issues in neighborhoods such as West Humboldt park with a large Hispanic population and Englewood with a large African American population.
Interprofessional Education
The UPHARM program is in collaboration with the College of Medicine UMed program and other Urban Health profession colleges at UIC based on the principles of interprofessional education.
